A pretty surreal video has made its way out of the Indian state of Odisha after snake wranglers were called in to remove a king cobra estimated at 15 or more feet. Footage from inside the school where the king cobra was found has gone viral as the snake absolutely did not want to leave.
If you are thinking ‘Cass, this is BroBible and you live in Florida, why are you writing about a snake in India?’ to that I’d say that the king cobra transcends international boundaries. It is the longest venomous snake on earth and can reach 19+ feet in length (among the heaviest too!!). So while I might not have any connection to India, I’m endlessly fascinated by natural wonders such as the king cobra.
The video was posted by BBC News to TikTok and YouTube and has gone viral on the former, so I have opted to include that version here. But for anyone that would rather watch the video on YouTube you can do so at that link.
We have 15+ foot snakes here in Florida, invasive Burmese pythons, but they are constrictors and non-venomous. I cannot fathom living in close proximity to venomous snakes that large.
Because in addition to being the longest venomous snakes on earth, these cobras are fast. They can reach speeds of 12mph which is under a 7-second 40-yard-dash speed. Sure, most humans are faster than that but do you really want to be testing your top speed against the longest venomous snake on earth with your life on the line? Probably not. It seems safest to just avoid them entirely.
For the uninitiated, another impressive trait of the king cobra is they growl when threatened. Yes, grow. I’m not saying they ‘hiss,’ this is a growl. Imagine walking through the woods and you hear this noise only to look down and see a 12-19ft snake growling at you. Code brown for sure.
Upon discovering the snake above at the school, the Odisha snake helpline was called and they came out to capture the cobra that evidently did not want to leave. At 15+ feet, it was able to rear up in anger and to wrap itself around poles at will. Just an absolute unit of a snake.
