Miami rap legend Trina delivered a medley of classics in the latest installment of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
The intimate 15-minute set began with Trina paying tribute to her mother, who died of cancer in 2019, with a rendition of “Mama,” a standout from the rapper’s 2017 album The One.
“This first song is dedicated to my mom,” Trina said prior to performing the track. “Without her, there would be no me, and she’s the reason that I’m standing here right now for you guys. So I want you to just enjoy.”
Trina added, “It’s a very personal song to me and if anybody has ever lost their mom or somebody special in their life, I dedicate this song to you.”
From there, the Slip-N-Slide Records artist performed 1999 hit collaboration with Trick Daddy, “Nann N***a,” as well as the title track from her 2000 debut LP Da Baddest Bitch, “Here We Go” (from 2005’s Glamorest Life), and 2007’s “Single Again.”
Ahead of her Tiny Desk set, Trina spoke with NPR’s Louder Than A Riot show about staying true to herself while coming up in the rap game.
“I believe in who I am,” she shared. “The game didn’t make me; I made the game. I made it. I already came in with a motive and an initiative to know who I am from. That’s why I breed a whole universe of bad bitches.”
