Notes once euphoric recently drifted much more softly through the air in Amsterdam, where Nicky Romero performed an aching cover of “I Could Be the One” to pay tribute to Avicii.

The influential Dutch DJ and producer performed his first-ever solo show, dubbed “Nightvision,” at AFAS Live on December 2nd. The concert showcased his illustrious career by virtue of an open-to-close set, but it was his musical elegy for the late Avicii that will stand the test of time as one of Romero’s best moments on the stage.

Featuring a gospel choir, his wistful live rendition was as much a fragile seedling drawing life from Avicii’s creative soil as it was a graceful wreath laid lovingly on his grave. With tender keys and tremulous musical prayers from Gideon Luciana, the performance forged an acoustic sanctum ringing with the creative spark of his truncated legacy.

“One of the most emotional moments in my life,” Romero wrote. “And in all honesty I wish I could play this song together, instead of playing this song alone, this record would never be what it is now without [Avicii] and sometimes I even feel guilty playing it, the truth is this record reminds me to value important moments and people in my life, thank you everyone for joining me at this special night.”
