Rhino is celebrating The Doors’ 60th anniversary with a massive release campaign including a vinyl box set, live album, and anthology book.
The 6-LP box set arrives November 22nd and will surely get collectors salivating. As part of the label’s hi-fi audiophile vinyl series, the set will include each of the band’s studio albums spanning 1967 through 1971, all cut from the original master tapes by esteemed cutting engineer Kevin Gray and pressed at Optimal Media in Germany. The box sets are limited to 3,000 worldwide.
Additionally, Rhino will be roll out the The Doors – Live in Detroit as a 4-LP release — the live album’s first-ever vinyl release — for Record Store Day Black Friday on November 29th.
Recorded to tape during the band’s performance at the Cobo Arena in Detroit on May 8th, 1970, the live album captures The Doors at their musical peak, with a set featuring numerous blues covers (Junior Parker’s “Mystery Train” and “Crossroads” by Robert Johnson) as well as a 17-plus-minute version of “The End” and 19-minute version of “Light My Fire.”
Lastly, Genesis Publications will publish the first-ever complete anthology book about The Doors, entitled Night Divides the Day. The tome will “illuminate the band’s archives like never before with rare photography, intimate interviews with Robby Krieger and John Densmore, and meticulously sourced archival text from Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek.” The book also includes a foreward by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and an afterward by Gustavo Dudamel.
Limited to 2,000 copies, the 344-page book comes in a box set that’s hand-signed by Densmore and Krieger and includes a 7” vinyl record with rare demos of “Hello, I Love You” and “Moonlight Drive” mastered by Bruce Botnick, plus other assorted historical memorabilia.
