Aerosmith may not be done just yet. Despite singer Steven Tyler’s vocal injury putting an end to the band’s activities, bassist Tom Hamilton is holding out hope that the legendary rock act can get back in the saddle.
In a new interview with Boston radio station WBUR, Hamilton gave an update on Tyler’s condition, while also leaving the door open for Aerosmith to reconvene in some capacity.
“Steven’s healing process is going really, really well, but it goes at its own pace,” Hamilton said. “Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big if and the last thing I want to be doing is to try and push Steven in that direction.”
He continued, “If we do anything in the future, it would come from him.”
Aerosmith were forced to postpone their farewell tour in September 2023 when Tyler fractured his larynx during a concert three shows into the outing. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers had hoped to resume the tour in September 2024, but shocked fans in August when they announced their retirement from touring effective immediately, due to Tyler’s injury.
“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing,” stated the band at the time. “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”
In the meantime, Hamilton has started a new band called Close Enemies. The outfit recently inked a record deal with TLG|ROCK, and embarked on a winter US tour last week. The outing runs through a January 29th show in St. Louis.
