Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has released his new single, “Soldier in the Army of Love,” featuring his 13-year-old son Roman. It will appear on what he’s billing as “my first ever full-length solo rock album.” Stream it below.
Featuring muscular guitar riffs and a solo from Roman (who also co-wrote the song), “Soldier in the Army of Love” is a rally for change, as Morello raps, “Tectonic plates set to shift/ Border patrol’ll never catch this riff/ Gotta turn your illness to a weapon, son/ Who needs a weapon when you were born one?”
“It’s a salute to the transformative power of music as both a balm to heal the soul and a battering ram to fight for justice,” Morello explained in a statement. “The song also has a generational rock n roll bloodline. The heaviest riffs were written by my 13-year-old guitar wizard son Roman, who also plays the shredding solo, giving me hope that’s there’s a new generation of soldiers in the army of love coming to the rescue.”
It’s worth noting that Morello has previously released three albums under his name: The Atlas Underground, The Atlas Underground Fire, and The Atlas Underground Flood. However, each of those efforts were packed with guest appearances.
Earlier this week, Morello joined Jane’s Addiction on stage in Germany to perform “Mountain Song” and “Chip Away.” He’s currently in the midst of a run of solo concerts and festival gigs in Europe, and will return to the United States this fall for appearances at Louder Than Life and Aftershock.
