A giant rat the size of a small dog was found in a home in Normanby, North Yorkshire in Great Britain. Making matters worse, local politicians say it could be a “sign of things to come.”
The enormous rat, approximately 22-inches-long from nose to tail, may be a new record for the largest rat ever discovered in the United Kingdom, according to the Daily Mail. It also caught the attention of some of the city’s residents who claim the rat problem in the area is getting out of control.
Councillors David Taylor and Stephen Martin wrote on social media that public garbage containers are “overflowing” with “easy food” for the rodents.
“It’s almost the size of a small cat. And it’s not a one-off,” Taylor wrote. “The longer this is ignored, the worse it will get. We need action — not just advice.”
Local residents are very concerned
The Standard reports that pest control experts said the giant rat was captured near the home’s boiler and was breeding. Another Councillor, Paul Salvin, reported that the rodent was suspected to be a sewer rat which had broken in through the pipes.
“There are growing concerns from residents reporting more and more rats again,” Salvin said. “It’s knocking everyone sick locally. Everywhere in the country will have something like this, you’re just not hearing about it.”
Taylor also reported seeing large holes in the ground while walking his dog in the neighborhood, which vermin specialists said were holes from rats clawing their way up from the sewers. He and the other Councillors now want a full vermin survey and treatment plan across the borough, proper funding to tackle infestations, and joint action with businesses, landlords, and social housing providers.
He said that while it would expensive to rid the area of all of the rodents, the rats “will keep multiplying and unless there is a big cull in the area, people will keep experiencing this.”
Giant rats are becoming a serious problem
Local residents are concerned that their city will become the next Birmingham. In April, the British Army had to be called in to Birmingham after pest control experts called the city “apocalyptic” due to all of the rats that had infested the city due to garbage strikes. During that time, a Birmingham pest control expert also caught what he said was a 22-inch long rat.
“You’ve got the diseases that the rats carry as well as the toxins released by dead rats,” he warned. “You breathe that in, and it could give you breathing difficulties. So it’s not just coming into contact with the rats. It’s actually in the presence of them. You’re breathing that toxin can make me seriously ill.”
Rat populations are also growing out of control in several cities across the United States. Cities where rat numbers increased the most during a lengthy study period (an average of 12 years) were Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Toronto, New York City, Oakland, Buffalo, Chicago, Boston, Kansas City, and Cincinnati.
