FKA twigs to Play Josephine Baker in Upcoming Biopic

FKA twigs is reportedly in talks to star as the groundbreaking entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker in an upcoming biopic directed by French filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré.

According to Variety, the multi-talented artist is in negotiations to star in the currently untitled project, which has notably been endorsed by Josephine Baker’s sons, Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker.

A true pioneer, Baker broke barriers as the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture with 1927’s Siren of the Tropics. Outside of entertainment, she aided France’s military intelligence agency during World War II and was a prominent civil rights activist in the 1950s.

It’s also worth noting that Baker inspired FKA twigs’ look for Met Gala 2025, which centered on the theme of Black dandyism. “There’s space for glory and outrage, and that, I think, is what being a dandy is all about: Having the confidence to stand there and trigger and enlighten and confuse and amaze through style,” twigs said in an interview with Vogue. “There is no diamond that could have outshone the one inside Josephine’s chest.”

twigs last starred in a 2024 remake of The Crow opposite Bill Skarsgård and is next set to appear in The Carpenter’s Son alongside Nicolas Cage. Her most recent album, Eusexua, was released in late January. Read our review and pick up your copy here.

Doucouré is best known for her 2020 feature debut, Cuties, a film that garnered both critical acclaim and controversy for its critique of the hypersexualization of preadolescent girls.
