DENZEL Washington has hinted about retiring in the past, and now fans are sure that his hint could soon become reality.
The 69-year-old New York-born actor is known for having starred in several blockbuster movies including the likes of The Equalizer, Training Day, American Gangster and Deja Vu.
Denzel has been acting since 1977, with his most recent role being in the upcoming flick Gladiator 2 alongside the likes of Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.
The action movie, directed by Ridley Scott, will hit cinema screens on November 22 in the United States and Canada.
In the flick, Denzel plays the role of Macrinus, a powerful broker who uses his wealth to support the Roman army and his gladiators.
And the movie synopsis states that the film follows Lucius (Mescal) who witnessed the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle, who must now enter the Colosseum.
“With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, he looks to the past to find the strength and honor needed to return the glory of Rome to its people,” the description states.
Speaking out ahead of the movie’s release, Denzel revealed that he feels he is nearing the end of his career, with many fans devastated at the prospect.
“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in,” he told Empire, adding, “and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker. I was tremendously inspired by Ridley.”
RETIREMENT PENDING
Reacting to the sad statement, fans shared their thoughts online.
“Pretty said to think Denzel’s career is almost over,” one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, said.
“Damn, he going to retire in a few years,” echoed a second.
“He’s a regular worker but it’s starting to hit me that we’re getting closer to a day when Denzel won’t be in a new movie,” a third glumly noted.
“So what he’s saying is that he’s technically retired but will come out of retirement for the right project. King behavior. I stan,” said a fourth.
However, although there was chatter surrounding his possible retirement, some fans were speculating a possible superhero stint for the star.
“I really wouldn’t be surprised if he signs up to be in a superhero movie in the next few years,” said one.
I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera
Denzel Washington
This comes mere weeks after Denzel hinted at retirement when he appeared at the American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach in June.
Speaking on a panel at the event earlier this summer, the Flight actor spoke of how he might not be in front of the camera very much going forward.
“The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera,” he said.
“I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.”
‘NEVER SAY NEVER’
The year prior Denzel also dipped his toe into retirement when in April 2023, Denzel spoke to Entertainment Tonight about how he would not be returning to The Equalizer franchise.
“This is the end for me. It may not be the end, they may do another one, but it’s the end for me,” he said at the time.
He then added that even a “massive cheque” would not persuade him to act in the franchise again.
“Never say never, but you never know,” he concluded.
