BTS finally reunited as Suga is discharged from mandatory military service

All seven members of K-pop band BTS have been reunited as Suga has been officially discharged from South Korea’s mandatory military service.

BTS’ management agency, Big Hit Music, confirmed that Suga completed his alternative service duties on Wednesday after using his remaining leave. On June 18, the agency revealed that no “special events” will be held over fears of overcrowding.

“No special events are planned on the day of Suga’s discharge. Overcrowding can pose safety risks, and we sincerely request our fans not to visit the sites in person. Please convey your warm regards and encouragement in your hearts,” read the official statement.

“We are always grateful for your unwavering love and support for Suga. Our company will continue to put our utmost effort into supporting our artists.”

While six members of BTS served South Korea’s mandatory military service, Suga worked as a social service agent, an alternative to military service. Suga reportedly chose to fulfill his role in this department due to sustaining a shoulder injury before his enlistment.

Suga’s bandmates Jin and J-Hope were discharged last year, while RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook were discharged from duty on June 10-11. While BTS has yet to reveal any reunion plans, fans will undoubtedly be happy to see all seven bandmates back together.

What is South Korea’s mandatory military service?

South Korea’s military service requires all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 to perform 18 to 21 months of military service. There are exemptions for people “incapable of performing military service due to any disease or mental or physical incompetence.”

The law also gives special exemptions to athletes, classical musicians, and ballet performers who manage to get first place in international-level competitions.

League of Legends pro, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, famously had his enlistment removed after his team won a gold medal at the Asian Games. However, these special exemptions don’t cover K-pop idols.
