Amon Amarth have released the one-off single “We Rule the Waves,” their first new song in three years.
A follow-up of sorts to their 2022 anthem “Put Your Back into the Oar” — right down to the similar artwork of a Viking ship — the new track is another fist-raising riffer with a chorus that beckons to be shouted in unison with frontman Johan Hegg: “We are, we are Vikings!”
The band never skimps on its music videos and the clip for “We Rule the Waves” is a Hollywood-level production, depicting an historically accurate Viking encampment and an obligatory scene on the open sea, during which our characters indeed rule the waves aboard their longships.

“‘We Rule The Waves’ is our tribute to the spirit of freedom, brotherhood, and the will to conquer — not just lands, but your own limitations,” stated Amon Amarth in a press release. “It’s about standing tall with your clan, facing the storm head-on, and carving your mark into the world like a Viking longship through blackened seas.”
The Swedish band’s first new music since 2022’s The Great Heathen Army arrives amidst its ongoing US tour with headliners Pantera. The bands play Thursday (July 17th) in Clarkston, Michigan, with dates running through mid-September. Get tickets here.
