Unless you’re a diehard devotee of the one-man show, movies need a diverse cast of characters to move the story forward. You’re not going to love all of them — that’s arguably the protagonist’s only job — but they all serve an important narrative function. Except that one guy. You know the guy. The character in your favorite movie who sucks so much that they seem to be actively sabotaging the story rather than contributing to it and may or may not be purely a screenwriter’s revenge on an actor who couldn’t remember their name.
For user VishnuBhanum, it was Lex Luthor as played by Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. “Honestly, (it) offended me on a personal level,” they told r/Movies. “I thought the film itself was just fine. It’s not especially good but still enjoyable enough. Every time the ‘Lex Luthor’ (character) was on the screen though, I just want(ed) to skip the dialogue entirely.”
They asked for more examples of “the one character that single handedly brought down the whole film,” and Reddit rolled their eyes all the way through their faves.
