Justin and Hailey Bieber’s relationship dates back to a 2009 Today show appearance.
Hailey, then 12 years old, reportedly met the Baby singer backstage with her father, Stephen Baldwin, after his performance.
February 2011
Justin, Hailey, and Stephen were photographed together at the premiere of Justin’s Never Say Never documentary.
Hailey later said during an interview with Vogue that she found the Canadian superstar “cute.”
“I was never a superfan, of him or of anyone. It was never that crazed, screaming thing. I didn’t think about it in any kind of way except for the fact that he was cute,” she said via People.
“Everybody had a crush on him. But for the first few years we had a weird age gap.”

Justin, Hailey, and Kendall Jenner were all seen together at a Hillsong Church service.
Not much is known about the outing, but Hailey revealed that the church played a role in their reconnection.
“One day Justin walked into Hillsong and was like, ‘Hey, you got older.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, what’s up?’ Over time he became my best guy friend. I was running around with him as his homie, but we weren’t hanging out [romantically],” she said, via People.

Dating rumors for the pair began after the church appearance, but during an interview with E! News, Hailey denied that they were together.
“I’ve known him since I was so young — since I was like 13 — and we’ve just been good friends over the years.
“We have just stayed close and there’s nothing more to it than that.”
Later that month, they rang in the New Year together.

Dating rumors surfaced again after Hailey was spotted on vacation with Justin and his family in Tulum, Mexico.
Later that month, they rang in the New Year again, but this time, they were spotted kissing at Leonardo DiCaprio’s New Year’s Eve party in St. Barts, according to People.

Justin and Hailey acknowledged that they were in a relationship but made it clear that they were not exclusive.
During another interview with E! News, Hailey said that the pair were “not an exclusive couple,” adding that “relationships at this age are already complicated, but I don’t really like to talk about it because it’s between me and him.”
As for Justin, he spoke with GQ, saying that Hailey was “someone [he] really love[s],” but starting a serious relationship was not a good idea because there was already “a lot that [he had] to commit to,” including a tour.
Later that year, the pair split in a “very dramatic excommunication,” according to People.

After Hailey and Justin called it quits, he got back together with Selena Gomez, but in May 2018, the pair called it quits for good.

He popped the question during a romantic dinner in The Bahamas while they were on vacation, according to People.

Justin revealed during an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden that he struggled mentally at the start of his marriage.
“It’s a journey. I remember when I first got married, I hit a little bit of an emotional breakdown because I thought marriage was going to fix all my problems and it didn’t,” he said via People.
“It just kind of was a reflection of like, man, you’re a bit of a hypocrite man.
“You want your wife to do something that you’re not doing and it’s like, it’s hard sometimes to look in the mirror and really have to realize, man, maybe you’re not the person that you necessarily thought that you were,” he continued.
“And that’s just a result of trauma and life circumstances.”
Over the years, Justin has been open with fans about his struggles with mental health, which he said played a role in his highly publicized 2014 DUI arrest.
“7 years ago today I was arrested, not my finest hour. Not proud of where I was at in my life. I was hurting, unhappy, confused, angry, mislead, misunderstood and angry at god,” he wrote in a January 2021 Instagram post, which featured a picture of his arrest.
“…All this to say God has brought me a long way. From then til now I do realize something.. God was as close to me then as he is right now. My encouragement to you is to ‘let your past be a reminder of how far god has brought you.
