It appears Sugarhill Gang’s Wonder Mike wasn’t lying when he said: “hip, hop, the hippie, the hippie/
to the hip hip, hop-a you don’t stop” all the way back in 1979, on the first rap track to break the Billboard 100, “Rapper’s Delight.”
Now, 50 years on, hip-hop shows no signs of stopping soon, just as Mike predicted way back when.
What you hear is not a test: depending on how you measure it, hip-hop and rap have now been a part of the culture for half a century.
To celebrate, this Aug. 11, some of the biggest names in rap from past and present are bringing it all back home, to the Bronx, where rap music originated.
Whether you’re an old-head, or you’re riding the new wave, there’s plenty to like at Yankee Stadium’s Hip Hop 50 showcase, featuring legends like Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, and the Sugarhill Gang, 90’s titans like Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube, and many, many more.
This one-day festival features as many as 24 (!) performers, alongside DJ performances, and more rappers yet to be announced.
Come see T.I., Ghostface Killah, Lil Wayne, A$AP Ferg and many, many more, all on one action packed day for fairly cheap.
At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on general admission passes were a very reasonable $144 before fees on Vivid Seats, even more reasonable when you put together how many classic acts you’re getting for just one ticket.
