Winona Fighter Talk New Music, Influences, and Winona Ryder

Nashville-based act Winona Fighter have been quickly rising up the punk-rock ranks over the past few years. The band has inked a deal with Rise Records, and is set to release its debut full-length album, My Apologies to the Chef, on February 14th.

On the same day as the album release, Winona Fighter will embark on a US tour, running from Valentine’s Day in Atlanta through a March 7th show in Kansas City (pick up tickets here).

Heavy Consequence caught up with Winona Fighter’s Coco Kinnon (vocals), Austin Luther (bass), and Dan Fuson (guitar) at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, where the band members talked about their recent single “Swear To God That I’m (FINE),” their early influences, and their record deal, among other topics.

As far as her journey into punk music, Kinnon told us, “My dad raised me on some pretty great music: Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Audioslave — all those grunge and rock bands from the ’90s and early 2000s. I was a big Creed fan, not as a joke. I was a very serious Creed fan as a kid.”

She continued, “I started taking drum lessons in the third grade, and I wanted to hit hard … so then I went down the rabbit hole of punk rock. I started with … Fall Out Boy and The Offspring … and then I got introduced to the Dead Kennedys, NOFX, Black Flag, and it was game over from there.”

It’s no secret that Winona Ryder inspired the band’s name, so we went ahead and asked whether they’ve had any acknowledgement from the Stranger Things actress. Oddly enough, Kinnon’s response focused more on country star Wynonna Judd than Winona Ryder. Watch above to see her answer, along with the rest of the interview.
