Pom Pom Squad Announces New Album Mirror Starts Moving Without Me

New York indie rock outfit Pom Pom Squad have announced Mirror Starts Moving Without Me, their sophomore album, out everywhere on October 25th via City Slang. They’ve also shared “Spinning,” the second single from the album.

Pom Pom Squad is led by Brooklyn musician Mia Berrin, who performs alongside guitarist Alex Mercuri and drummer Shelby Keller. The group previously shared the grunge-tinged “Downhill,” which was Pom Pom Squad’s first bit of new music since 2021. Now, the former CoSign is back with 11 new tracks that take inspiration from childhood, mental health, and identity.

“I took a lot of inspiration from my younger self on this album,” Berrin said in a press release. “I wanted to get back in touch with my creative roots. After hitting a particularly rough bout of writer’s block, I challenged myself to make a playlist of my all-time favorite songs from childhood to adulthood. It was healing in a way I didn’t expect! Before we went into the studio I made my bandmates and Cody do the same, then we all listened to each other’s and had a long conversation about them. Through the sessions for Mirror we were all pulling references from our collective playlists more than anything else.”

“Spinning” is the latest single from Mirror, and it encompasses a great deal of the album’s themes around identity, reckoning with the past, and accepting oneself. Written with Jessica Boudreaux, Becca Ryskalczyk, Alina Sloan, and PVRIS’ Lynn Gunn, “Spinning” takes a syncopated electric guitar attack and thrashing drums to generate momentum while Berrin’s voice guides the track to a place of clarity.
