After Nosferatu made $181 million worldwide, making it the biggest box office hit of Robert Eggers‘ career, the acclaimed filmmaker has now reportedly lined up his next project: an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
While Robert Eggers’ next movie is set to be Werwulf at Universal, recent reports indicate that he has signed on to direct an adaptation of A Christmas Carol for Warner Bros.
A Christmas Carol, published by the legendary Charles Dickens in 1843, tells the store of elderly grouch Ebenezer Scrooge being visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.
“Sources tell Deadline that Warner Bros is in development with Eggers who will write and direct a retelling of the classic Charles Dickens Christmas ghost story A Christmas Carol. Insiders add that while negotiations are not underway with talent, Eggers is writing the role of Ebenezer Scrooge for his longtime collaborator Willem Dafoe.” [via Deadline]
While Dafoe has yet to officially sign on to star in the film, the 69-year-old Oscar nominated actor is essentially Eggers’ muse as he’s featured in each of his last three films.
There have been numerous film adaptations of A Christmas Carol over the decades, most notably 1938’s A Christmas Carol, 1970’s Scrooge, 1992’s The Muppet Christmas Carol, and the 2009 animated adaptation from Disney.
Although A Christmas Carol is obviously a children’s story, it does have the elements of gothic horror that Eggers has become renowned for on his films The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, making him an undeniably exciting pick for the director’s chair.
As for Eggers’ Werwulf film, reports indicate production will begin later this year ahead of a currently scheduled Christmas Day 2026 release date.
