The 96th Academy Awards is just a few days away, and fans are waiting with bated breaths to find out which films will grab the top honors this year. The Oscars are probably the most prestigious film award in the industry, but it has often faced criticism for some of its shortfalls. From being accused of favoring white actors to Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub this year, the list of controversy is quite something! Similarly, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe once called the Academy for failing to acknowledge the last film in this fantasy film franchise.
Daniel grew up while doing the Harry Potter films alongside his co-stars, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. The movies were based on JK Rowling’s works. The films have been commercial blockbusters and received pretty positive reviews from critics. The franchise has made about $7.7 billion globally in gross box office earnings. The last installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, contributed $1,35 billion to the franchise’s total revenues. It was the eighth and final movie in the franchise and an emotional affair since fans had to bid goodbye to their favorite characters forever after watching them on screen for many years.
For the unversed, Daniel Radcliffe led Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which received only three Oscar nominations, and that too in the technical categories. Meanwhile, that same year, Martin Scorsese’s 3D children’s film Hugo received 11 nods, and another black and white silent film, The Artist, was nominated in 10 categories.
During an interview with the Radio Times, Daniel Radcliffe addressed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s Oscar snub and took an alleged dig at veteran director Martin Scorsese. He said, “I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films or kids’ films unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese.” He explained, “I was watching Hugo the other day and going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed.”
The Harry Potter actor continued, “There’s a certain amount of snobbery. It’s kind of disheartening. I never thought I’d care. But it would’ve been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in.”
Daniel Radcliffe led six out of eight Harry Potter films nominated for the Oscars over the years. They were all in technical or craft categories. On the other hand, another fantasy film based on the novels has the record for the highest number of Oscars among film franchises. The Lord of the Rings film series based on John RR Tolkien’s books has 17 Oscars to its credit.
The Return of the King made history by winning all 11 categories in which it was nominated.
The Oscars 2024 will be held on March 11, and it will be live on ABC.
