Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan seems like an acquired taste, to say the least.
Take Matthew McConaughey, for example, who is reportedly hesitant to officially sign on to the upcoming Yellowstone sequel series because of Sheridan’s reputation for having a “god complex” and being a “jerk.”
There is also the long-running, well-documented drama between him and Yellowstone star Kevin Costner, which is why it’s taken so long for the final batch of episodes to be filmed and released.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that Sheridan’s apparently prickly personality translates to some disproportionately angry feelings about… Forrest Gump?
During a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, Sheridan says he “hates” the movie of Forrest Gump because its lead character is a “doddering f—— idiot” who the film suggests is “the only guy who can figure out the world.”
“For me, the holy grail as a storyteller is entertain, educate, and enlighten. Don’t give anybody answers, just lots of questions to think about – that’s my job. Because I can’t stand to pay money to have someone preach to me their ideas,” Sheridan, creator of series such as Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, said.
“That’s the reason I hated Forrest Gump… this doddering f—— idiot is the only guy who can figure out the world? Everybody else around him… he’s just gonna go on a f—— run across America and everyone’s gonna follow him and that’s gonna heal the country? I just was like, ‘What is this sh*t?’” he continued.
Sheridan wasn’t done there, though, as he predictably waded into the topic of cancel culture and suggested that Forrest Gump couldn’t be made today because of it.
“The irony is you couldn’t make that movie today because someone would be too offended at the portrayal of Forrest’s character,” Sheridan said.
Released in 1994 and based on the 1986 novel of the same name, Forrest Gump grossed $678 million at the global box office (against a $55 million budget) and won six Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Tom Hanks, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing.
At this time it is unknown when the final episodes of Yellowstone will premiere.
