Superman writer and director James Gunn has addressed criticisms that the movie is “woke.” According to Gunn, the movie is simply about kindness, which he says “was” an American value.
The first official entry in the new DCU franchise, Superman has proven to be both a critical and financial success, as its largely rave reviews have led to the film grossing over $400 million at the global box office in its first two weeks, despite the efforts of right-wing outlets to label the movie as “SuperWoke.”
In a recent interview, Gunn discussed the insincere criticisms that the movie is woke and explained that it is simply about kindness, which “was” the American way but is less so these days.
James Gunn says Superman isn’t woke, it’s just about being kind
“I’ve heard people say Superman was woke, and then I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not. I am curious as to what in the movie is considered woke,” Gunn said in an interview with EW.
“It’s a story to me about kindness. That’s the center of the movie for me. That’s the thing we can all act upon, is kindness. And so what does that lead to? Well, does that lead to the way you vote? Sure. Does that lead to everything? Yeah. Does it lead to how many people are dying from road rage? Yes. All those things are affected if people just start to value kindness,” he continued.
“I mean, people did value kindness in the past. That was an American value, was kindness, and it doesn’t necessarily seem to be that way to me anymore. So that was always the center of the movie for me, and it wasn’t about anything other than that.”
According to reports, the success of Superman has led Warner Bros. into fast-tracking its Wonder Woman movie, which is being written Ana Nogueira, who also penned the script for Supergirl. Next up for the franchise will be the release of Supergirl, which hits theaters in June 2026, and Clayface, which is also scheduled to release next year.
Additional projects in the works are a Swamp Thing movie from Logan and A Complete Unknown director James Mangold, a Batman movie, The Authority, a Bane/Deathstroke movie, an animated Robin movie, and more.
Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luhtor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and Frank Grillo as Rick Grillo Sr.
