Rob Lowe has lived so many different lives as an actor it’s hard to keep track. His early days were as a member of Hollywood’s ‘Brat Pack’ where he starred in The Outsiders and other films. He is probably best known in the past 20 years for West Wing and Parks & Rec but there was a stretch where Rob Lowe appeared in a ton of Saturday Night Live-adjacent films.
Crossing paths with SNL stars in Tommy Boy, Wayne’s World, Jiminy Glick, and the Austin Powers franchise, Rob Lowe spoke about the difference between working on Tommy Boy and Austin Powers and how one of the ad libbed scenes starring ‘Fat Bastard’ was the moment he knew he was experiencing ‘comedy directly channeled from God on high.’
As Lowe tells it, he didn’t realize how incredible Tommy Boy was until he saw it on the big screen but with Mike Myers going off the cuff as Fat Bastard, he knew in that moment that he was part of something incredibly special.
It really is wild to think that so many people know him as Chris Traeger from Parks & Rec or Sam Seaborn from The West Wing but films that he has appeared in as a supporting actor have grossed $1,240,674,885 at the global box office. Obviously, the Austin Powers franchise is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that number but his silver screen career has been incredibly impressive dating back to The Outsiders.
For anyone out there that needs a refresher on that ‘Baby Back Ribs’ scene starring Fat Bastard, you’re in luck as there are several thousand clips of that moment on YouTube:
Currently, Mike Myers is listed on IMDB as working on ‘Austin Power 4’ and ‘Shrek 5.’ Both are listed as in development and the latter of which supposed to hit theaters in 2026. Presumably, the next Austin Powers film will come after that.
