Peacock announced this morning that Universal Pictures‘ musical sensation Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, will begin streaming exclusively on the service beginning March 21, along with the Sing-Along version and other bonus content.
The biggest Broadway adaptation of all-time globally, at a worldwide gross of more than $727 million, Wicked won this year’s Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and is currently up for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The first in a two-part adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which is itself based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, the film examines the origins of Elphaba (Erivo), who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West (of The Wizard of Oz fame), and her complex relationship with Glinda (Grande), the Good Witch.
Jon M. Chu directed both films — including sequel Wicked: For Good, out November 21 — from a a script by the stage show’s book writer Winne Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Marc Platt produced through his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions, alongside David Stone, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and more featuring in the cast.
The film’s other Oscar nominations came in the categories of Best Actress (Erivo), Supporting Actress (Grande), Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Sound and Visual Effects.
