‘Office’ Star Rainn Wilson Thinks ‘Last Of Us’ Displays “Anti-Christian Bias”

While HBO’s The Last of Us may be one of the biggest hits they’ve ever produced, it doesn’t seem like former The Office star Rainn Wilson can be considered amongst the series’ fans.

Prior to the release of season one on Sunday, Wilson, referencing the prior episode, accused the show — which is about both zombies and what the bible refers to as the apocalypse — of displaying an “anti-christian bias.”

“I do think there is an anti-Christian bias in Hollywood,” Wilson said in his tweet. “As soon as the David character in The Last of Us started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain. Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”

While Wilson would have a point of The Last of Us was about the last group of regular folks living in an evolving neighborhood (or something else along those generic plot lines), the fact is that the series in question is not only a work of utter fiction but it’s about the literal end of the world.

One of the themes of the entire series is whether or not what’s left of saving humanity is worth saving in the first place. Not even the main character, Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller, is being painted in a particularly, uh, redeeming light.

If anything, he should be accusing the writers of being lazy and cliched, as having a preacher that’s also a pedophile is a narrative we’ve all seen many times before, both in reality and pop culture.

I’m also not quite sure that this one can be pinned “Hollywood”, per se, as David is a character from the original The Last of Us video game that was developed over a decade.
