The Office is getting a remount, and it will officially land on Peacock.
The new series is something of a “sister show” to the original NBC series, which ran from 2005 to 2013 and was adapted from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s The Office (UK). The characters and setting will be brand new, but it’ll take place in the same universe, with the same “documentary crew” from The Office. Original US Office developer Greg Daniels will lead the spinoff series, along with Nathan For You and How To with John Wilson producer Michael Koman.
While the original American version of The Office was set at the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, the new series will take place at a newspaper publishing office in the midwest. The official logline reads “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
The show will begin production in July. Domnhall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore are the only two actors confirmed to appear in the ensemble cast, with more casting announcements to come. “It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” NBCUniversal Entertainment President Lisa Katz wrote in a statement. “This new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
Greg Daniels previously teased a spinoff of The Office last year, and claimed he was interested in treating it the way Star Wars treated The Mandalorian — the same universe with different stories and characters. “I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot,” Daniels said. “Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”
