Universal and Illumination have announced that Minions 3 is the next sequel in the animated franchise but fans will have to wait to see it, according to Variety.

Bryan Lynch will write the script, and Pierre Coffin will direct the film, which will be released in June 2027.

The movie will be produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan.

Since the release of the first Despicable Me and Minions films, the franchise has become the largest animated franchise in history.

Together, Despicable Me and Minions movies have grossed close to $5billion.

Minions: The Rise of Gru, topped the global box office in its opening weekend, shattering previous July 4 holiday weekend records with an impressive $125million revenue.

Despicable Me 4 came in with an impressive $122.6million in its debut, falling just short of the record.

Despite the success of the most recent film, fans are eager to see more from Gru and his band of minions.

Following the news of the delayed release date, fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their disappointment.

“Why announce it this early if it’s going to be a three year wait,” one critic questioned.

U ain’t rihanna we ain’t gonna wait that long,” another mocked.

“Why is it taking soo damn long,” a fourth fan wondered.

“Cool, only 3 years to go!” someone else wrote sarcastically.

Despicable Me and Minions Movies

Illumination Entertainment has been dominating the box office since the release of the first Despicable Me movie. The film premiered in July 2010, raking in more than $543million at the box office. Despicable Me 2 following in 2013 and the first Minions films was released in 2015. It was recently announced that Minions 3 won’t hit theaters until June 2027 and fans are furious about the long wait but Illumination has been staggaring its release dates for years, seeing impressive numbers at the box office each time.

Here’s a look at every film in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise, as well as how it performed:

  • Despicable Me – $543.6million
  • Despicable Me 2 – $971million
  • Minions – $1.159billion
  • Despicable Me 3 – $1.035billion
  • Minions: The Rise of Gru – $939.4billion
  • Despicable Me 4 – $122.6million (opening weekend)

“That’s far bruh,” a sixth commenter complained.

Other commenters complained that they “can’t wait that long,” with another arguing that it’s “too far away.”

METHOD TO MADNESS

While fans aren’t happy about having to wait for a new Minions movie, the franchise has been releasing its films this way for years to great success.

Variety film critic Peter Debruge wrote a piece analyzing the state of the summer box office, as well as animation overall.

In it, he noted that Fourth of July “once belonged to Will Smith,” but it’s now “the domain of Despicable Me movies.”

For seven out of 14 years, Illumination Entertainment has released a film on the holiday weekend, whether it was part of the Despicable Me/Minions franchise or another film, like The Secret Life of Pets.

Each time, they have made millions in box-office revenue.

“Less than a year after dual writers’ and actors’ strikes shut down Hollywood, kid-friendly cartoons are propping up the theatrical box office in a big way,” he wrote.
