A Minecraft Movihas exploded to become one of the most successful movies of the year so far, and one of the biggest video game adaptations of all-time. Viral videos recorded in movie theaters also seem to be showing the film producing audience reactions the likes of which we haven’t seen since Avengers: Endgame (in terms of audience noise and pandemonium).

During its opening weekend, the Jared Hess-directed A Minecraft Movie racked up $157 million on the domestic box office ($301M globally), making it both the biggest domestic debut of the year and the best in history for a video game adaptation.

In particular, a scene in which Jack Black’s character Steve exclaims “Chicken Jockey” is exploding on social media, with videos showing audience members climbing on each other’s shoulders, throwing popcorn in the air, shrieking in joy, and so on.

“My theater clapped every time Jack Black name dropped a Minecraft item that was in the trailers, and when he said Chicken Jockey I s— you not the entire row in front of me gave a standing ovation,” one viral tweet explained.

“The whole cinema repeated Flint & Steel, I am Steve, and f—— erupted in hooting, hollering and applause after all basically yelling Chicken Jockey. Genuinely abhorrent film and an insult to the artform itself but the funniest f—— theatre experience I’ve ever had. 10/10,” added another.

“That was the wildest theater experience of my life. Most of the audience were middle schoolers and they would clap and hoot and holler whenever one of the meme lines was said or when they recognized something from the game. When Jack Black said ‘Chicken Jockey,’ the theater erupted into sheer pandemonium. Kids were cheering, clapping, and jumping onto the tops of seats,” a third summarized.

This one particular video I came across on Twitter was so loud, so absurd, that I initially assumed it was doctored.

While the intensity and virality of these audience reactions are certainly similar to Avengers: Endgame, the more apt comparison was the release of the Minions movie a couple years back, which also saw Gen Z teens pulling up to the theaters in droves, largely dressed in suits as “Gentleminions”, for a seemingly ironic movie screening/rock concert hybrid.

As for what a “Chicken Jockey” even is: it’s a rare hostile mob configuration in Minecraft where a baby zombie, baby zombified piglin, baby zombie villager, baby husk, or baby drowned spawns riding atop a chicken.

In addition to Jack Black, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen.
