A large fire near UNLV’s campus has destroyed several businesses.
On Friday morning, a fire at a building near UNLV’s campus destroyed at least eight businesses, including a post office location, before firefighters were able to arrive at the scene.
The epicenter of the blaze, first reported at 8:12 a.m., is the University Gardens Shopping Center. At least eight businesses, including the University Las Vegas U.S. Post Office, were destroyed, according to Clark County Senior Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Touchstone.
As of 9:30 a.m., the department had not been able to conduct a search to determine if anyone was inside the building, Touchstone said. He said it could take several hours to search the building, due to its instability.
The Clark County Fire Department had 120 to 125 firefighters on the scene and quickly contained the fire.
“We declared a defensive operation on the main fire and worked to protect the exposures on both the north and south sides,” Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Touchstone told reporters. “We have been able to successfully do that with minimal damage to the north and south wings, protecting those businesses.”
Video of the fire has circulated on social media.

As of Friday afternoon, it was unclear whether anyone had been injured in the fire.
“Right now, we don’t know if there are any victims because we haven’t been able to search the main occupancy, and that’s going to take us a few hours,” said Touchstone in a press conference.
