If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to sit in on a celebrity’s therapy session, Jonah Hill’s new documentary is for you. Hill, who has opened up about his mental health struggles, directed a movie about his relationship with his therapist, Phil Stutz. “Stutz” will be available on Netflix on Nov. 14.
“How can I make a movie about people being vulnerable and working on their problems if I’m not being vulnerable myself?”
As appealing as it may be to be a fly on the wall in a therapist’s office in Hollywood, Hill’s documentary is so much more than a behind-the-scenes look at his psychotherapy sessions. The “Don’t Look Up” star, who opened up about severe anxiety and consequent panic attacks, found life-changing tools that helped him cope with his mental illness. Now, he wants to share the privilege of going to therapy with the rest of the world. More specifically, the helpful coping strategies and wisdom that have come from his healing relationship with his therapist, Stutz.
“I’m just gonna start by acknowledging how odd this endeavor is, a patient making a movie about his therapist,” Hill said in the trailer. “But my life has gotten immeasurably better as a result of working with [Stutz]. If it worked for me, maybe it will work for other people.”
In the beautifully shot trailer, reminiscent of black-and-white film, the actor and director asks: “How can I make a movie about people being vulnerable and working on their problems if I’m not being vulnerable myself?” To that, his therapist replies, “You can’t move forward without being vulnerable,” and this intimate feature looks like it will showcase Hill’s vulnerability and so much more.
