Regardless of how you felt about the “Chicken Jockey” meme from the Minecraft movie — understood it or didn’t, loved it or hated it — one thing is for certain: Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show have killed it.

Like all memes, good, bad, or otherwise, the nexus point at which is crosses over from being funny to unfunny can be found where brands get involved. In fact, there’s a meme about that very phenomenon.

For the Chicken Jockey/Minecraft meme, that death knell came on the Wednesday, April 9 episode of The Tonight Show, as Jimmy Fallon and his eternally corny shtick and soulless eyes got involved, immediately driving a stake through the heart of the joke.

“The joke was already dying in the ER and then Jimmy bombed the hospital,” one viral tweet added.

“F it just drop the nukes already,” another joked.

“Finally. Jimmy Fallon killed the meme. It’s over. All of the theater employees can sleep in peace now,” said a third.

As for what exactly a “Chicken Jockey” is: it’s a rare hostile mob variant in Minecraft, featuring a baby zombie, baby zombified piglin, baby zombie villager, baby husk, or baby drowned spawned riding a chicken.

Why “Chicken Jockey” is even a ‘thing’ in the first place requires a bit deeper explanation, however: it’s because of its rarity within the Minecraft game, as a chicken jockey has just a 0.25% chance of appearing if no chickens are nearby, and 0.4875% if they are.

Alongside Jack Black as Steve, the original Minecraft character, A Minecraft Movie — which has been a massive success at the box office and will undoubtedly spawn a sequel — also stars Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen.
