Superman writer and director James Gunn absolutely cleaned up with his paycheck for the project, as he made twenty-times more money than the film’s stars, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.
Warner Bros. was in desperate need of Superman being a success and that is what James Gunn delivered, as overwhelmingly positive reviews — 83% critics score and 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes — led to the film taking in $217 million at the global box office in its debut weekend.
In the wake of Superman‘s opening weekend triumph, Variety published an in-depth report about the reaction to the film around Hollywood and the immediate future of DC Studios.

One particularly interesting bit, however, revealed that Gunn made $15 million as writer/director — plus another seven-figures as co-CEO of DC Studios — while Corenswet and Brosnahan, Superman and Lois Lane, were paid $750,000.
“Typically, a film’s stars earn the top salaries. But in this case, Gunn was by far the highest earner, pulling down 20 times more than David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), who each earned $750,000 to Gunn’s $15 million, according to sources (Gunn also draws a seven-figure salary as the studio’s top executive).”
“And Nicholas Hoult, who plays archvillain Lex Luthor, nabbed a $2 million payday. Although Warner Bros. has sequel options on Corenswet and Brosnahan, a sequel announcement does not appear to be imminent.” [via Variety]
Following the success of Superman, DC Studios released the first poster for Supergirl — hitting theaters in June 2026 — while reports also indicate that a Wonder Woman movie is being “fast-tracked.”
Sources also indicate the studio is “thrilled” with Matt Reeves’ recently-submitted script for The Batman: Part II, which is currently scheduled to release on October 1, 2027 — which would be over five years since the release of The Batman in March 2022.
