Jack Black showed his solidarity with those affected by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes by — what else? — singing Taylor Swift in his underwear on stage.
Black was one of the performers on at The Give Back-ular Spectacular! Show on Wednesday night (October 25th) at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. As The Independent tells it, he performed a set of stand-up comedy at the fundraiser before he stripped down to his boxers and socks, his hair and beard as voluminous as ever. The actor then asked the audience for “requests,” and one spectator asked if he knew Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero.”
“I know that one — everyone knows that fucking song,” Black responded, before immediately jumping into the chorus: “It’s me, hi/ I’m the problem, it’s me!” His brief a cappella cover was delivered in the most Jack Black way possible, which means there were lots of flailing dance moves and cartoonish vocals before the song became indecipherable.
Actors have been on strike since July, after failing to negotiate a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Despite the financial toll it’s taken on its union members, SAG is persisting — even banning Halloween costumes inspired by struck content this year.
The whole thing has been nothing short of a bummer, but knowing Jack Black is vehemently on board serves as a glimmer of hope. You can see a clip of his performance below.
Black recently voiced Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, while Swift is set to resume “The Eras Tour” next month with shows in Latin America, before heading to Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America next year. Tickets for the international dates can be purchased here, and tickets for the North American stops are available here.
