A powerful line of storms brought wind gusts of more than 100 miles per hour to North Dakota over the weekend and eventually formed an intense tornado in the small town of Enderlin. Three people were killed by the massive twister, which was captured on camera by nearby residents.

Resulting videos from the deadly derecho are straight out of a movie.

The Cass County Sherrif’s Office received word that an Enderlin home suffered major damage from a tornado strike at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Friday. Storm chasers were the first to arrive to the scene. Unfortunately, they informed the first responders that they had found two people dead inside of the debris. Firefighters later found a third person dead at a different location.

The word “derecho” stems from the Spanish word meaning straight, reflecting the straight-line winds that characterize this specific weather phenomenon. It is a fast-moving windstorm caused by a line of severe thunderstorms. These specific storms in North Dakota hit speeds up to 105mph.

Train cars flipped over and flew off of the tracks with the utmost of ease and they were not even empty. Houses ripped apart at the seams.

One specific video of the supercell’s arrival to Enderline puts its size into perspective. A massive mushroom cloud circled over a residential neighborhood and eventually closed in on the path of destruction as it started to twist.

The sheer size of the storm looks like it was made for the silverscreen with Computer-Generated Imagery. It wasn’t. This is what closed in on Enderlin, North Dakota:

That supercell eventually spun into a tornado.

The storm left a trail of destruction as it very quickly moved through the region. Three people tragically passed away from the tornado.

Although there is a lot of sadness for the people of North Dakota, local meteorologist Brandon Payne was able to serve as a beacon of hope. He rescued a wandering corgi from the storm before it turned fatal.

My heart breaks for the people of Enderlin. I wish them all the best during their recovery from one of the most insane supercells I have ever seen.
