Nearly fifteen years after the release of I Am Legend, Warner Bros. is developing a sequel.
Deadline and Variety report that the studio is bringing back Will Smith for the next chapter, with the King Richard actor set to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in the forthcoming film.
Jordan will also produce the movie alongside his co-star. Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the 2007 film from the Richard Matheson 1954 novel, will be penning the sequel script. A director is not yet attached.
Released on Dec. 14, 2007, I Am Legend brought home the then-largest-ever box office opening for a non-Christmas film released in December. The film would go on to be the seventh-highest grossing film of 2007, earning a combined total of $585 million with $256 million coming domestically and $329 million internationally.
The news arrives on the heels of Smith winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Serena and Venus Williams’ father, Richard, in the Warner Bros. film King Richard. The role landed Smith a Best Actor nomination at this year’s Academy Awards.
Meanwhile, Jordan, who’s coming off the Denzel Washington-directed A Journal for Jordan, is set to star in Creed III, which is scheduled to be released on November 23, 2022.
