You might have heard praises of Dev Patel‘s Monkey Man everywhere. Patel’s Labor of Love is an intense, high-octane action-thriller soaked in vengeance and served on a delightful platter of emotion and culturally rich optics. After rave reviews and accolades at film festivals, the movie was finally released worldwide on April 5. And despite stiff competition from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, the movie has swept into second place.
Among the new movies, Moneky Paw Production’s Monkey Man outperforms 20th Century Studios’ The First Omen, with $10.5 million to $8 million+. While Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire still holds strong. The movie was expected to make around $50 million at the domestic box office but made $80 million.
The box office numbers worldwide were also mindblowing as it made a whopping $194 million instead of its expected $135 million. Meanwhile, Dev Patel’s movie arrived at the cinemas this weekend and received positive reviews from the viewers.
Both results are less than their $12 million+ forecasts. However, as previously said, Monkey Man is in a more robust financial condition, having been acquired by Universal for less than $10 million. The movie is picking up pace as more viewers flood the discourse with rave reviews.
Monkey Man has yet to receive approval for release in India, where Universal retains rights. The film’s producers opted for a theatrical release after Jordan Peele backed it because they also saw its promise for the big screen. Netflix, who paid a reputed $30 million for the film, decided not to release it because, as per reports, it was too grim for the Indian market, which they hoped to win.
The action-packed thriller, produced by Universal/Monkeypaw and directed by Patel, is set to impact 3,000 theaters worldwide. The movie premiered globally on April 5; its release date in India was April 19. However, it still needs the censor certificate, and its release in India has been delayed.
A gripping revenge action thriller, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel, who also stars as the lead. Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikander Kher, Sharlto Copley, Vipin Sharma, Makrand Deshpande, and more also star in pivotal roles.
