One of the interesting things about superhero reboots, especially with characters like Batman and Superman, is the comparisons that are made between the actors who have played the part. It’s even more interesting when one of the actors themselves, such as Dean Cain, who played Superman on the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, weighs in on the latest iteration of the character.
In an interview with TMZ this week, Cain questioned director James Gunn stating that Superman is an immigrant.
“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” Gunn recently told The Times of London. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”
Dean Cain, in addition to disagreeing with Gunn, thinks his statements could hurt the movie at the box office. Not that he wants that to happen.
“How woke is Hollywood going to make this character? How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times?” Cain said to TMZ.
“For Superman, it was ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way.’ Well, they dropped that. In fact, they let it go. … And they came up with ‘Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.’ Changing beloved characters I don’t think is a great idea. If you want to create a new character, go ahead and do that. But for me, Superman has always stood for ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way,’ and the American Way is immigrant friendly, tremendously immigrant friendly.
“But there are rules. You can’t say you want to get rid of all of the rules in America because I want it to be like Somalia. Well, that doesn’t work. … There have to be limits because we can’t have everybody here in the United States. Everybody can’t come here. Our society will fail. So there have to be limits.”
“Bringing Superman into it, I think that was a mistake by James Gunn to say it’s an immigrant thing, and I think it’s going to hurt the numbers on the movie,” Cain continued. “I was excited for the film. I’m excited to see what it is because James Gunn seems to have a sense of humor and the last iterations of Superman didn’t have much humor, and I love the humor in Superman. So I’m rooting for it to be a success.”
He added, “I don’t think it’s going to help the numbers, and people really need to be educated on this immigration system because we are the most immigrant-friendly, by far, country on this planet.”
