Chili’s Opening First Scranton Location With Nods To ‘The Office’

Chili’s was heavily featured in multiple episodes of The Office, but the chain didn’t actually have a location in Scranton when they were filmed. However, The Electric City is finally checking that box thanks to the opening of a restaurant that was designed with the show in mind.

The bulk of The Office takes place in, well, the office that serves as the headquarters for the Dunder-Mifflin branch located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but there are a number of episodes that feature members of the cast heading to another locale.

That includes the Chili’s that made its initial appearance in the first episode of season two while serving as the backdrop for The Dundies, the awards show that leads to Pam getting banned from the restaurant after being severely overserved with the help of the drinks she pilfers from her coworkers.

That Chili’s makes a second appearance in the second season as the site of the meeting where Michael and Jan land a contract from the county government after the former flexes his salesman skills by fostering a relationship with the official played by Tim Meadows while largely ignoring the latter’s business advice.

As you may or may not know, The Office was primarily filmed in California, and the Chili’s was a former Black Angus Steakhouse in Panorama City that was refashioned to resemble the real thing.

Scranton was a Chili’s desert when those episodes were filmed (the closest location at the time was a restaurant in Wilkes-Barre that has since closed), but according to the Associated Press, the drought is about to come to an end 20 years after they aired.

The Chili’s in question is actually located just outside of Scranton in the borough of Dickson City, but it was specifically designed with The Office in mind and features a purposefully retro aesthetic defined by the requisite chalkboards and tile tables.

It will also be the only Chili’s to offer the “Awesome Blossom” on its menu when it opens for business on April 7th, and you’ll be able to celebrate the occasion and try to feel God at other locations that will offer a “Scranton marg” for $5 on that day.

It’s about time.
