Carrie Fisher Passed Away After Suffering A Medical Emergency On A Flight In 2016
Carrie Fisher was on a flight from London to Los Angeles on December 23, 2016, when she suffered a medical emergency about fifteen minutes before the plane landed. A passenger performed CPR on her until paramedics arrive, but she was reportedly unresponsive prior to landing.
She was rushed to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and immediately placed on a ventilator. Unfortunately, after four days in intensive care, Carrie passed away at age 60 on December 27, 2016. Her daughter, Billie Lourd, confirmed her passing in a statement at the time.
On December 28, 2016, only one day after Carrie’s death, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, had a stroke while the family was making preparations for Carrie’s funeral. She was rushed to the hospital and died later that afternoon.
A few weeks later, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released her death certificate, which stated “cardiac arrest/deferred” as the cause of death. A few months later, the coroner’s office reported that the exact cause of death could not be determined, but listed “sleep apnea and the buildup of fatty tissue on the walls of arteries were among the contributing factors” to her death.
