Celine Song’s Materialists will likely have viewers pondering what makes a romantic comedy as the film arrived in theaters today. Song’s previous work Past Lives (2023) was much more a romantic drama, but her sophomore feature starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal takes references from classic New York romantic comedies and more.

‘Notting Hill’ (1999)

’10 Things I Hate About You’ (1999)

The 1999 high school-set classic also stars Gabrielle Union as Chastity and Allison Janny as Ms. Perky. The ‘Bridget Jones’ Films

Bridget Jones’s Diary came out in 2001, introducing the world to quirky journalist and writer Bridget (played by Renée Zellweger) and a love triangle she falls into between Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver. The antics continue through Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004), Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016) and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025). The first three films are streaming on Max while the fourth arrived on Peacock in February of this year.

‘The Proposal’ (2009)

Based on Jenny Han’s best-selling books, the films follow hopeless romantic Lara Jean as her five love letters to past crushes get mailed, and she is forced to deal wit the results.

The film also stars Rebel Wilson as Robin, Leslie Mann as Meg, Alison Brie as Lucy, Damon Wayans Jr. as David, Anders Holm as Tom, Nicholas Braun as Josh, Jake Lacy as Ken, Jason Mantzoukas as George and many more. The film follows Alice as she decides to break up with her long-term college boyfriend Josh, whom she met freshman year, because she hadn’t been single in a while. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018)

Asian American Rachel Chu is deeply in love with her boyfriend Nick Young’s family, but when she flies to Singapore to meet them, she feels out of place, and there is tension around their relationship as a result. ‘This Time Next Year’ (2025)

The pair strike up a rivalry and enemies to lovers romance do to their fate of being born January 1, but the lore runs deeper than just that. The film also stars Golda Roseuvel in the role of Quinn’s mother Tara, Monica Dolan as Minnie’s mother Connie and John Hannah as Minnie’s father Keith, among others. It is available to stream in the U.S. on the Roku Channel.

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ (2025)
Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell drive Prime Video’s You’re Cordially Invited (2025). When Jim’s (Ferrell) daughter Jenni’s (Geraldine Viswanathan) wedding gets double booked with Margot’s (Witherpoon) sister Neve’s (Meredith Hagner) ceremony, the claws, crocodiles and all sorts of other shenanigans come out as the two parents fight over the same wedding venue, an idyllic southern island. The romantic comedy also stars Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, Ramona Young, Kely Monterroso Mejia and more.
