Best Movies To Stream In August

As summer nears its final moments, several films that arrived in theaters earlier this year will be available to stream in August. From action and adrenaline to animated adventures to classics with passionate fandoms, new releases and older films that gain rewatches multiple times over will rotate between the various streamer services.

The Woman King will rotate off of Netflix and onto Hulu, while other streamers gear up to make contextual films to their new projects available leading up to the launch of new content, like with Prime Video’s getting all three The Hobbit films as well as the original Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy ahead of Season 2 of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arriving August 29.

Beetlejuice – August 1, Max

For those already counting down to the release of Warner Bros. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) — or the arrival of fall in general — in September, Beetlejuice (1988) will arrive on Max on August 1 for streaming. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara will reprise their roles of Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz and Delia Deetz from the original film.

Ahead of the arrival of Season 2 of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power at the end of the month, Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films — each adapted from the books by J.R.R. Tolkien — will be available to stream starting August 1. They will be accompanied by The Hobbit trilogy on the streamer at the beginning of August as well.

All three The Hobbit films — An Unexpected Journey(2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) will arrive on Prime Video to stream August 1. These films serve as prequels to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Harry Potter Films – August 1, Peacock

All eight Harry Potter films will be streaming exclusively on Peacock in August. A rewatch of the magical movies is great for any time of year, especially when they are all in the same place, as that makes an in-order marathon easy. Whether it’s because fall is approaching or viewers look forward to the new Harry Potter television series in the works, the wizarding world will be accessible via Peacock.

The Planet of the Apes reboot directed by Wes Ball took place hundreds of years after Matt Reeves’ movies. It opened in theaters to $58.4M with a total of $170.6M in the 85-day window at the box office. Available to stream on Hulu August 2, the film will join its predecessors Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001), Ruper Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), and Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).

The Bikeriders – August 9, Peacock

Based on the 1968 photo book by Danny Lyon, The Bikeriders (2024) waited a while to release in theaters. Now the motorcycle movie will rev onto Peacock on August 9. The film fictionalizes the story of the Chicago Vandals (Outlaws in real life) with Austin Butler portraying Benny, a newcomer to the gang formed by Johnny (Tom Hardy). Jodie Comer played Kathy, who provided a window into the cinematic story for Mike Faist’s Danny Lyon. Many more famous faces make up the cast of Jeff Nicols’ film.

Renfield – August 9, Peacock

Chris McKay’s horror comedy Renfield starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage follows Renfield (Hoult), the assistant of narcissist Dracula (Cage). The film arrived in theaters on April 14, and it will be available to stream on Peacock August 9. Renfield has decided to search for a new life outside of working for Dracula, but this would mean an end to their co-dependent relationship.

The Woman King – August 13, Hulu

Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, and Thuso Mbedu lead the historical epic, based on true events in the Kingdom of Dahomey. From director Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film follows Davis’ Nanisca, leader of the Agojie, or all-woman army in the powerful African state, as she trains Nawi (Mbedu) to join the ranks of the fierce female warriors. John Boyega stars as King Ghezo, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays antagonist Santo Ferreira. Sheila Atim plays Amenza, and Bridgerton newcomer Masali Baduza plays Fumbe. Jayme Lawson and Adrienne Warren also appear as Shante and Ode.

Immaculate – August 16, Hulu

Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, arrived in theaters in March 2024. The horror film follows Sweeny as Cecilia, an American nun who takes up residence in an Italian countryside convent. Things quickly turn from peaceful to creepy as Sweeney’s character has nightmares and gets wind of something sinister in the convent. Simona Tabasco stars in the Neon film directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel.

The Fall Guy – August 30, Peacock

Ryan Gosling’s ode to stunt performers, which arrived in theaters in May, will be available to stream on Peacock starting August 30. In addition to the final cut of the film that theaters saw, an extended cut version which includes 20 minutes of scenes not featured in the original film, will land on Peacock on August 30.
