Angelina Jolie once, in an interview, revealed being unhappy about the portrayal of her character as it was not very racy. The actress even turned down that movie initially but then did it anyway. Jolie is one of the highest-paid and most successful actors in Hollywood. She is a global superstar who has done dozens of movies across various languages.
Jolie started her career as a child actor and shared the screen with her father, Jon Voight, in Lookin’ to Get Out. It was her screen debut. She established herself as an efficient actress, Gia, and then bagged the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Girl, Interrupted. She earned another Oscar nomination for her performance in a leading role for Changeling. Jolie proved herself as an action star with movies like Salt, Wanted, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and others.
Angelina Jolie’s status as a star reportedly came with the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. However, she passed on the role initially as she felt the character didn’t suit her. However, she came around when makers told her she could travel the world and train with the British military. The action-adventure movie is based on the Tomb Raider video game series. In an interview, Jolie once revealed that she was unhappy with her role as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movie.
The Eternals star told Black Film, “I wasn’t satisfied with it. Through the making of that film, we were all still trying [to] figure out how things worked, and we were trying to make the video game into a person, but still, it was the video game, and still, she was a video vixen, and she wasn’t quite a solid woman with emotions and feelings.”
Angelina Jolie felt the character’s s*xual appeal impacted the film’s reception in the theatres. She tried not to repeat the same mistakes while doing the sequel. She added, “Even the way she looked wasn’t to me s*xy and real enough. So there were a lot of things, and we couldn’t adjust to everything right. We thought a lot about how to make the second film right.”
The first film came out in 2001, followed by its sequel, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, two years later in 2003. The 2001 film was made on a reported budget of $115 million and made $274.70 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.
The franchise was rebooted in 2018, but Jolie did not return to reprise her role. Instead, Alicia Vikander took charge as Lara Croft.
