Mike Mitchell’s Kung Fu Panda 4 is set to release on March 8 in the US, and the film has been getting rave reviews after it premiered at the AMC 14 Theater at The Grove in Los Angeles. And it seems like Po the Giant Panda, voiced by Jack Black, is all set to surpass Timothee Chalamet & Zendaya’s Dune 2 at the box office with a $50 million target.
Dune 2’s Opening Weekend
Denis Villeneuve’s film earned $82.5 million on its opening weekend. The film initially started with $12 million on Thursday with previews. These numbers have been the biggest since 2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Dune 2’s Expected Second Weekend
Timothee Chalamet & Zendaya‘s film is said to bring another $40 million to $45 million in its second weekend. Audiences are already rooting for the film for a rare film, and it will be difficult to replicate such masterpieces anytime soon. Tickets are selling like hotcakes at the box office.
Kung Fu Panda 4 Ready To Overtake Dune 2
However, Timothee Chalamet‘s dominance at the box office will be challenged by Po the Panda this weekend, which aims at $50 million opening weekend collections at the domestic box office. Early estimates and critics’ reviews suggest that ticket sales will initially improve compared to their previous parts. Kung Fu Panda 3 debuted with $41 million at the domestic box office, while Kung Fu Panda 2 registered a $47.6 million opening box office.
Only Behind Kung Fu Panda
The fourth installment of the franchise will be only behind the original, part one that registered a $60 million opening weekend. In fact, it might be a much more profitable deal at the box office since the film is made on a very restricted budget of $85 million, unlike its other parts that range from $135 million to $150 million.
While Kung Fu Panda 4 will uproot Dune 2 from number 1 at the domestic box office and claim the top spot, it would be interesting to see how the film fares in its lifetime. Meanwhile, Dune 2 is all set to surpass the entire lifetime collection of its predecessor, whose domestic tally lies at $108 million.
