Movies and TV are all about showing, not telling. It’s no surprise, then, that some of the most iconic characters of the big and small screen are so memorable in part because they have an instantly recognizable look. Walter White, Hannibal Lecter, Bunsen Jude the Science Dude, etc. What, you’ve never heard of the bargain-bin Bill Nye that appeared on Bones? We had, like, four Bunsen Judes at our last costume party. You’re the weird one.
On the flip side, some of the best movie and TV characters are never seen at all. They’re an idea, a plot device, or at most, a disembodied chin. “Shout out to Moose Thompson, Junior Singleton, Stinky Peterson, Buster Hadfield, Old Man Sedgewick and Flinty McClintock from The Red Green Show!” user Longroof told r/AskReddit.
They then asked, “What is the best movie or TV character that is never actually seen?” and the answers that followed definitely weren’t hidden.
