Anyone that has ever driven in a snowstorm where the roads haven’t been completely plowed knows how frightening it is to try and pass a semi.
Your vision is wiped out as snow blowing up from under the semi covers your windshield. The road is slick as snot. And it is made even worse if you are trying to make this pass on a two lane road because then you are having to deal with the potential of oncoming traffic.
These are all lessons that the driver of a Subaru WRX apparently either hadn’t learned or just decided to ignore on January 16 when they tried to defy all of those things… and failed… miserably.
Dashcam footage from a New York State Department of Transportation snow plow shows the terrifying decision this driver made end with his car ripped completely in half.
According to Road & Track, the plow was moving at 32 mph at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in New York’s Adirondacks, between Blue Mountain Lake and the town of Inlet, according to X user Erik Ghirarduzzi, who captured images of the aftermath of the spectacular crash.
It really is a miracle that no one was injured or killed as a result of this terribly bad decision.
Interestingly, four years ago, the YouTube account Cars with JR actually asked the question, “Can the Subaru WRX handle a snow storm?
“The greater Seattle area was hit with 6-12 inches of snow; the snowiest February in the cities history,” reads the description to their video. “We got about 8 inches the first day and another few inches the next day with very minimal snow plowing services. The weather closed down many roads and businesses but it didn’t stop Subaru owners likewise from enjoying the snow.”
Their Subaru WRX didn’t fare too bad, but they also threw on some Alitmax Arctic tires on the car before heading out on to some barren roads, not a two-lane highway in the middle of a snowstorm.
“Totally impressed with the performance of these tires,” the narrator says at one point in the video. “But I can’t stress the importance of having proper tires for the proper conditions.
“Today I saw a, let’s just say it’s a Subaru, trying to do some stuff on his nineteen inch summer tires, and it didn’t end too well for this guy.”
It didn’t end well for the guy on January 16 in New York either. Perhaps he, and everyone else out there, should just chill and take the advice of the New York State Department of Transportation…
