‘Quite Possibly The Best Vacation Hack Of All Time’: Woman Learns Elevator Button Trick For When You’re At A Hotel. Then She Shows It Off

Summer comes with the promise of travel and good times. It also comes with one annoying inevitability: vacation frustration.

While holidays are supposed to be a time of rest and relaxation, jetting off to a faraway destination often brings headaches, confusion, and a lot of future stories—such as the woman whose holiday illness resulted in an entire flight being canceled.

Plus, there’s always the chance that you almost make it through the holidays without incident, only to have things ruined at the last minute. For example, you oversleep and need to check out of your hotel quickly. But the elevator down to the front desk feels like it’s stopping on every single floor. What’s a traveler supposed to do?

Now, TikTok user Courtney Hocker (@cocohock) says that she has the solution to this particular issue.

How Do You Put An Elevator In ‘Express Mode’?

In her video, which currently has over 65,000 views, Hocker shares what she says is “quite possibly the best vacation hack of all time,” which she claims she learned from a worker at the hotel she’s staying at.

“When you’re on vacation, if you hold down the number [of the floor] you want to go to and the ‘close door’ [button] at the same time, then it won’t stop,” Hocker states.

“You know how you have to, like, pick people up at every floor? It won’t do that if you hold them down,” she continues. “So, hold down your number and the ‘door close’ button, and it works.”

Does This Really Work?

Immediately, some commenters were ecstatic about the idea of not having to wait for other people to board their elevator.

“Doing this in my building at work. I’m on the 30th floor in a 40 story building. I just want to get home,” wrote a user.

However, others doubted whether this advice truly worked.

These users were correct to doubt the advice. The ‘express elevator’ myth has been floating around the internet for decades, and while some internet users insist that the trick actually works (some say it only works on older models of elevators), there’s no significant evidence to say that this is the case.

To start, most “close door” buttons on elevators are effectively non-functional. To summarize, due to the Americans with Disabilities Act, elevators in the United States are required to have their doors open for a certain amount of time before they will close automatically. If one presses the “close door” button during this allotted time, the elevator will ignore the command and the doors will not close.

In instances where floors must be skipped due to emergencies, or where the owner of a building wants to be able to have full control of the elevator’s movement, elevators can enter either Fire Service Mode or Independent Service Mode. However, generally speaking, entering either mode requires a physical key, not simply a series of button presses.

In conclusion, while you might be in a hurry to get out of a hotel or back up to your room, you’re probably going to have to simply wait in the elevator with everyone else.
