Two homeowners were startled to discover that a mysterious door in their bathroom led not to the circuit breaker, but to an area that they describe as a “portal to h—.”

In a video, New England-based TikTok user Savanna (@savanna.alley) shows herself and her partner standing in their bathroom. Behind them is a door that is situated above the toilet.

Upon opening the door, they see a staircase lined with pink insulation.

“Go up there!” Savanna says.

“F— that s—,” her partner responds.

In the caption, the TikToker writes, “I thought my circuit breaker was there, but we found a portal to hell instead.”

Viewers Freak Out

Savanna’s video has 10.4 million views. Immediately, viewers shared in Savanna and her partner’s terror.

“Bro above the toilet!? I’d be using that thing backwards, ain’t not way my back is just gonna be turned to that lol,” wrote a user.

“Imagine being on the toilet and hearing footsteps coming down those stairs,” offered another.

“This is how every single horror movie should go,” declared a third. “This man is smart.”

Even though commenters were freaked out by the situation, many demanded answers: What could possibly be in this previously undiscovered upstairs room?

What Was In The Secret Room?

In a follow-up video, Savanna’s partner ventures into the previously unknown room.

Fortunately, the room, while certainly having an eerie vibe, has nothing sinister in it. Instead, it is simply an attic filled with wiring and insulation. And while there is also a box in the attic, further inspection shows it contains nothing of note.

While this may be disappointing for viewers expecting something a little spookier, discoveries like these aren’t particularly uncommon in the United States.

Although there are occasionally viral stories of people discovering hidden rooms in their houses, typically, most areas of the house are accounted for when someone purchases it. All livable and usable areas would have been noted during a tour or by looking at the floor plan.

Attics, however, are a bit of an exception. According to the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey from the Department of Energy, around 56.5% of American homes have attics. But only 7.68% have finished attics with usable space.

As unfinished attics are not counted in square footage and frequently have little within them besides insulation, it’s understandable that one may not know they have an attic, or know how to access their attic, until long after they’ve purchased a home.

However, if one discovers that their home has an attic, stories like Savanna’s show that there’s usually nothing too notable inside—even if the journey of finding it is a little bit scary.
