Nina pays attention to portion sizes. “I used to eat three full meals, and then I would not be able to move after each meal. I would be so full and tired. Now, I eat all the time but portion control is what’s important for me—I’m eating more in total but not more at a time. I aim to have the size of my thumb in fat, the size of my palm in protein, and then unlimited veggies. I wish I’d learned this in school,” she told Shape.

“I just love working out,” Nina confessed to Women’s Health. Her  “workout cocktail” includes yoga, running, weight training, boxing, and group classes. “I’m getting older and more conscious of what I eat and how I eat it and what I do,” she explained. “Doing something different [each day] has been the most fun, and I’ve seen the most benefit because you shock your system.”

Nina is a big fan of the steam room. “I need to sweat every single day somehow, even if it’s just in the steam room,” she told Women’s Health.

Nina doesn’t worry about calories. In fact, she maintains that amping up her intake has done her body and mind good. “I feel healthier,” she told Women’s Health. “You’re happier when your body is full, your brain functions better, and you’re a nicer person. I would get hangry, I think, because I was so busy running around that I wasn’t the best version of myself.”

“I used to eat a lot of fish but in researching a lot about what goes on in the ocean, making a documentary of my own, watching another documentary that recently affected me significantly — at the rate that we’re eating fish, because there are so many humans on the Earth, it’s not sustainable,” Nina told Harper’s Bazaar‘s YouTube show Food Diaries. “And the fishing industry itself is not sustainable at all. So, as of recently, I have stopped eating fish altogether.”

Nina also revealed to Women’s Health that walking her dog is a morning ritual. “Some days are better than others, I’ll be honest with you. Some days, Maverick gets a shorter walk than she probably deserves, if I’m running late or don’t have it together or press the snooze button 18 times too many.”

Nina loves working out at home. “I’m really proud of my home gym, I use it a lot. It’s really nice to have that flexibility of working out, whether it’s really early in the morning before I get to set, or really late at night when I get home from set, or after a long flight,” she told Shape. Her gym is stocked with weights, a Pilates machine, NordicTrack Treadmill, and a SoulCycle at-home bike. “When I’m done shooting and I have to memorize the next day’s work, I can sit on the bike with my script and exercise, and learn my lines for the next day,” she said.

“When I’m sick or not feeling great, I’m all about the juices,” she explained to Well+Good. “It seems like the worse the taste, the better it is for you, so I do ginger, garlic, cayenne pepper, oregano oil—ugh, double ugh— lemon, everything.” Sometimes she adds collagen peptides for an added protein boost.

Cheat meals are a part of Nina’s diet. “I eat a lot of things. I eat healthy some days. I eat really bad some other days. I eat all kinds of yummy, like vegan burgers. I like making gluten-free pastas. I like cooking a lot, which is fun and also time consuming, but it feels sort of like, it’s a great way for me to unwind at the end of the day,” she told Wired
