Actress Melanie Liburd chatted about starring in the mystery thriller “Catalyst,” which was directed by Chris Folkens.
How was your experience in the film ‘Catalyst’?
My experience in “Catalyst” was lovely because I’m friends with Chris Folkens and David Bianchi. They said to me, “Would you like to do a role in our movie?” I said, “Yes of course I’d love to be in your movie,” though it did take a while for this whole process to come together. Throughout the experience, everyone really came together.
There were lots of friends of friends who had been in the business for a long time. It’s a good feeling on set when you work together with people you know!
Everyone wants to do well and to make something fun and interesting; everyone felt so passionately about the script, so that was great.
What did you like the most about your character?
The script contains some amazing questions for the audience — that really drew me in. The idea of someone doing something bad is interesting. Can one be forgiven? Can one heal? Can one be reformed?
All of this occurring in a sci-fi manner makes it feel outside the box and very badass. I just thought it was really fun. As it relates to The Architect, the idea of playing a powerful female presence trying to better humanity in the midst of all these men is very powerful.
What was it like working with Michael Roark and David Bianchi?
Ah! It is always fun working with Michael Roark and David Bianchi. They’re truly professionals, yet they’re fun. They work really hard and they’re just great people. It was a privilege to work with them.
What was it like to work with Christopher Folkens as director?
Chris is absolutely fantastic and it’s really lovely to see his story come together after years of writing, editing, and producing. He was a wonderful director, and he made it a joy being on set. He created a really great environment.
What did this screenplay teach you about yourself?
When I’m drawn to a script, I can’t help but learn something about myself and life. What’s lovely about this script is it leaves room for imagination; the audience and the actor themselves are prompted to think critically. I thought it was a really clever script!
How does it feel to be an actor in the digital age? (Now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent)
Crazy! I think you have to accept the digital age. There’s lots going on, with much crossover between gaming, sci-fi, movies, and television.
Many people are afraid of AI, but I think there can be positives as well. We’ll see how it goes. As we progress, more will unfold. It’s all very exciting and it’s incredible what can be created through AI and new technology.
What is your advice for young and emerging actors?
Ah! Young and emerging actors, you should study as much as you can. Study the craft, people, and psychology. I mean, I love it all.
I’m fascinated by people, books, acting books, and books about all kinds of people. Do your work, speak to people, live your life, and experience everything.
Enjoy it and start creating as soon as possible. Surround yourself by people who champion you (I think this one is really important).
What does the word ‘Success’ mean to you? (My favorite question)
Success looks like many different things. Life success to me is finding something I really love, finding my passion, and doing it. It is a privilege to do what I love.
What would you like to tell our readers about “Catalyst”? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it?)
It’s fun, exciting, and dynamic. The movie is action-packed, and it makes you think. I love a movie that makes you think. It was a super fun project to be on and I hope you all enjoy it. Go watch! Thank you.
