Three years ago, we met Riri “Ironheart” Williams, a brilliant MIT student and inventor who is the latest person to invent and don iron armor. Riri’s appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever set the stage for her own adventures back at home. What happens when a young person attains a high level of tech power? Will they choose to help others or serve their own interests? In the first trailer for Ironheart, we get to see how Riri forges her own frantic path towards becoming a hero.
In the Ironheart trailer, Riri is put to a test by the Hood where she must escape a poison-filled elevator in two minutes. She uses her genius to get out ahead of time and meets the Hood, revealing that she wants to build something iconic versus working at a tech firm.
Honestly, I’d want to do the same thing after seeing Wakanda. The Hood has the tools and cash to make it happen, but she has to do some things for him first. This puts her on a dangerous path that she will have to walk and eventually leave.
Riri is a newer comic character who truly deserves this solo outing. While people will surely try to write her off as the “female Iron Man” or his predecessor, Riri is much more than that as she navigates her complex life. In the comics, Tony served as more of a friend who respected her and gave her timely advice. He won’t be able to do that in the MCU, and it looks like Riri will need some guidance to get her on a better path. Maybe she will get the new Black Panther to guide her footsteps.
