How Hew Moran went from working in a library to 7 million YouTube subs

Hew Moran didn’t start out with ambitions of being a full-time content creator. He was simply working behind an IT desk at a library when he made the decision to take a shot on himself.

“I went to my boss and I was like, hey, I want to have off Wednesday night,” Hew recalled. “I explained to him, I got this Microsoft thing that I want to do that can really open the doors for the future of what I want. And he was like, can’t do it. So I quit.”

That opportunity came after Hew placed in the top ten at a Halo tournament in New York City. After the event, representatives from Microsoft approached him about streaming and collaborating with other creators using their tech space.

It marked the beginning of a new direction, one that would eventually see Hew become known for his Fortnite content and viral comedy skits.

“An early sign that I was on a path for success was definitely when I made a funny video about how Fortnite kids think that Fortnite created Master Chief,” he said.

That video blew up, hitting one million views in two weeks while Hew still had just 100,000 subscribers. It helped him realise he could compete in comedy, not just gameplay.

“I was only doing long-form content. That was the point where I realized, wow, I can actually really play in the big leagues of comedy skits.”

Quitting his job and switching from Halo to Fortnite were both major risks, but ones he says were worth it.

“Both of those things really required just fully going into it and fully committing,” Hew said. “I want to always be doing something that I find fun and I like being creative.”

Now he has over 7.8 million subscribers on YouTube and over 2.8 billion views on his channel, known for its mix of edgy comedy skits and gaming shorts.

His advice to other aspiring creators is clear: stop overthinking and just start posting.

“You have to make a hundred videos to get your quality up to a level where it’s like, alright, this is going to do good. Each time, do something super, super small and just keep getting better and better.”

Now, Hew is launching a new gaming channel, Hew Plays, and posting every day.

“There’s a lot of things that I’ve learned from my journey that I’m definitely going to take into the gaming channel,” he said. “It really helps to have people behind me that can help bring the quality to the next level.”

For Hew, success isn’t a fixed goal – it’s a moving target based on growth.

“I don’t truly think I’ve made it yet,” he said. “I just want to keep doing better and making better content. I want it to be something I’m proud of.”
