AN automotive influencer has revealed a cheap and easy way to repair a broken side mirror, saving a trip to the repair shop.
Depending on the make and model year, repairing the glass on a broken side mirror can be a costly fix.
But Ping Che Ge, an automotive influencer on YouTube (@chegeceping) that’s popular for his quick DIY tips and tricks, published a recent video on how to repair the broken glass of a sidemirror on a Volkswagen.
Opening up the video with a skit, he points out a broken mirror to the woman behind the wheel, to which she responds that going to a repair shop to have it fixed would cost thousands.
Depending on the make and model of the vehicle, and whether or not the side mirror has sensors, cameras, or heating modules attached and the severity of damage, that could very well be true.
Therefore, Che’s solution was to buy just the glass for the mirror for only $3, and replace it using no other tools than the key.
“Alight the car key with the base of the side mirror and tilt it outward,” he said, using the key like a crowbar on the broken glass.
“The old lens is removed and the new lens could be pushed in.”
The Volkswagen he’s using as a demonstration does have the glass pop in or out of a socket where the glass can be removed and replaced, but it should be noted that not all vehicles have that ability.
“Many things on a car can be replaced by ourselves, which is fast and cheap,” he said.
One viewer noted that in China, where Che is from, side mirror replacements are expensive compared to Canada.
“Woah, mirrors are extremely expensive in China,” they wrote.
“I looked it up, in Vancouver, it costs only $70.00.”
Someone else pointed out that 1,000 Chinese Yuan is about $140 in US dollars, making it not seem so expensive.
Che also went on to replace her windshield wiper blades and her cabin air filter for cheap, which one user humorously pointed out.
“Bro fixed her whole car instead of just replacing the glass on the mirror,” they wrote.
